Hey, Charleston. Ready to Get Out of Hibernation?
Here Are Five Must-Do’s in May.
Author: Jennifer Butler
It’s bittersweet, isn’t it? On the one hand, the chirping birds, climbing temperature, and increasing number of smiles is lovely. On the other, we are now entering the months where binge-watching Netflix in extra stretchy fleece PJs is frowned upon. (Collective sigh.)
If you’re anything like me, you may experience the post-winter haze of, “How do I do this social thing again?”
No worries, we’ve got you covered. Here are five events in Charleston you’ve just got to make it to this month.
1. May 2nd – 6th: North Charleston Arts Fest
This event highlights over 100 artists and performers. There will be theatre, dance, music, crafts, photography, and more. Need something free or cheap? The Arts Fest Expo on May 5th and 6th is hosted at the Charleston Area Convention Center, with free admission and parking.
2. May 11th – 13th: The Big Bounce America
Okay. Now a bounce house looks like a blast. This event is excellent for all ages because with the world’s biggest bounce house; it will bring out the kid in you for sure! It’s 10,000 square feet of bouncy fun, folks. Their 2017 tour sold out, so they’re coming to Middleton Woodlands this year with even more fun stuff to do!
3. May 19th: 7th Annual Charleston Beer Garden
As if the 60 beers on tap and 30 breweries wouldn’t be awesome enough, Charleston Beer Garden will also have games, food (including boozy ice pops), craft vendors, and live music. The focus for this year is “amazing brews from the Carolinas.” Yum!
4. May 22nd – 26th: The Atlantic Cup
The Atlantic Cup is the most prolonged offshore race in the Western Atlantic, and it’s returning to Charleston. The boats will be docked and prepping for the race, so stop by Charleston City Marina for an up-close view. May 24th offers a meet and greet for kids to meet the sailors. And on Saturday, May 26th, scoot over to the Charleston Maritime Center for the start of the race! (The gun goes off at 12 pm.)
5. May 25th – June 10th: Spoleto Festival, USA
This event is recognized as American’s premier performing arts festival, lasts for 17 days, and fills Charleston’s historic theaters, churches, and outdoor spaces with performances of all kinds. There will be opera, dance, classical music, theater, and jazz.
BONUS: Brownie Point Idea for Mother’s Day!
Psst… SpiritLine Cruises is hosting a delicious brunch during a cruise of the Charleston Harbor from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm on May 13th! There will be live music (smooth jazz) and a complimentary mimosa for each adult guest! (Yep. You’re welcome.)
