Charleston: Home of Spoleto Festival USA

The Spoleto USA festival was founded in 1977 by composer Gian Carlo Menotti, who intended to establish a counterpart to the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. Each year, the event begins in late spring and showcases emerging and established artists performing operas, theater, classical music, and jazz. This distinguished arts events will begin on May 25, and run through June 10th, 2018. While attending various performances, patrons of the arts will also find themselves inside historic venues around Charleston. These venues include places like the Charleston Gaillard Center, the Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul, the College of Charleston Cistern Yard, the Dock Street Theater, and St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. Many of the venues are within easy walking distance of one another and many of Charleston’s most loved restaurants making this festival a treat for the eyes, ears, and taste buds of visitors. With over 150 performances to choose from, fine arts supporters will surely find many events to enjoy in the beautiful and welcoming city. This year, the festival will include the Miami City Ballet Company, a team of acrobats, the Westminster Choir, Jon Batiste from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the Fred Hersch Trio, Italian marionettes, Ricky Skaggs, choreographers Michelle Dorrance and Kyle Abraham, and a multitude of others. Along with the official Spoleto USA festival, the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs offers a companion festival known as Piccolo Spoleto. Piccolo Spoleto highlights outstanding local and regional artists in as many as one hundred additional performances.
