Discover South Carolina History 

As one of the earliest American colonies, South Carolina is rich in history, especially from the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. A few refurbished forts still exist, as well as historic homes, the Charleston Slave Market downtown and naval museums with World War II ships on display. 

The blockbuster movie The Patriot (2000) starring Mel Gibson was filmed entirely on location across several South Carolina locations, including the Darby farm in Chester County and historic Brattonsville, Rock Hill, Edisto Island, Middleton Place Plantation, Lowrys and Cypress Gardens. Charleston is filled with historical sites, and perhaps none is more beautiful and interesting than The City Market downtown. Established in the 1790s, the market stretches for four city blocks from the architecturally-significant Market Hall, which faces Meeting Street, through a continuous series of one-story market sheds, the last of which terminates at East Bay Street. The entire complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Market Hall and Sheds and was further designated a National Historic Landmark. 

Patriot’s Point Naval and Maritime Museum is a hands-on history lesson located in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, across the harbor from the city of Charleston. Tour World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, destroyer USS Laffey, submarine USS Clamagore and the only Vietnam War Experience Exhibit in the United States. Packed with plenty of things to do and learn, you may find that one day here this summer isn’t enough. 

Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie are refurbished battle sites from the American Civil War, Fort Sumter being the location of the first shot fired in the war. Guarding Charleston from attack from the sea, they became the sites of a standoff between federal troops at Fort Sumter and Confederate troops at Fort Moultrie. Visit the sites and museums and soak in the rich history of one of the most pivotal sites in our history, including how they played a part in the Revolutionary War, and our defense until 1947.
